About President Frenk

President Julio Frenk

Dr. Julio Frenk is the sixth president of the University of Miami. A fourth-generation physician whose paternal grandparents fled Germany in the 1930s for a new life in Mexico, Frenk’s gratitude for the kindness of strangers has inspired him to improve well-being around the world. He was previously dean of the faculty at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and T & G Angelopoulos Professor of Public Health and International Development. As minister of health of Mexico, he expanded access to health care for more than 55 million uninsured people. Dr. Frenk was the founding Director-General of the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico and held top positions at the Mexican Health Foundation, World Health Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Carso Health Institute. He has an M.D. from the National University of Mexico and Master of Public Health and joint Ph.D.s in medical care organization and sociology from the University of Michigan. He has authored more than 30 books and monographs, and was a recipient of the Clinton Global Citizen Award for changing “the way practitioners and policy makers across the world think about health.” Frenk is married to Dr. Felicia Knaul, a social-sector economist, and is the proud father of four children.

About the Roadmap to Our New Century

The Roadmap to Our New Century is an ambitious endeavor to propel the University of Miami towards its greatest aspirations by its 100th anniversaryin 2025. Based on an intensive university-wide Listening Exercise that marked President Frenk’s first semester at UM, working groups of faculty, staff and students have conducted research, interviewed experts and examined best practices at other institutions to shape a set of draft Roadmap Initiatives.  For more on this exciting planning process to guide the future of UM, click here.
